Insomnia

Ever since I was little I've always been a slight sleeper. Some days I have no problems falling asleep, other nights I toss and turn all night long. Some of my weird sleep habits include the following. No matter how tired I am, if I take a nap during the day I won't fall asleep at all that night. I am perfectly fine falling asleep in a well lit room with the tv on but the minute the tv and lights go off I'm wide awake. If something wakes me up, such as a phone call, the dogs or the Hubby either as I'm falling asleep or am asleep I again am up all night.

What usually helps me fall asleep is the tv. I need some sort of background noise to help me sleep. For awhile the hubby put up with it but last night he told me he couldn't deal with it anymore. He says that he ends up staying up to finish watching the movie while I fall asleep. Even if I pick a movie he is sure to hate he will watch the movie until the end. He stated that last night was our last night to watch tv while going to bed.

Now I don't know what to do. I've tried everything to help me fall asleep. Warm milk, wine, and once I even tried Tylenol pm. That made me hallucinate and sleep walk! So I'm afraid to try anything like that again.

So now I have to try and figure out other ways to fall asleep. Any ideas?

  1. Try melatonin. Your body produces it naturally anyway to help you fall asleep. You can get delayed release capsules that will help you fall asleep and then also help you not wake up in the middle of the night. Hope that helps!

  2. i use to have this problem, so i used my ipod and it helped a lot. i wouldn't turn it very loud just enough that i could hear the lyrics or even better i would download movies to my ipod to watch.

  3. I agree with Just A Girl, definitely try melatonin, my mom takes it to help her sleep and she said it works wonders.

  4. I don't think I have insomnia, but I absolutely have trouble falling asleep or going back to sleep once awoken. I have found that crossword puzzles or sudoku puzzles help my eyes tire out.

My husband hates it, can't sleep with a light on at all. Sudoku has become a verb in our house as in "are you going to Sudoku all night"?????? During deployments I am free to do it as much as I want though. It helps me but only if I stay in bed. If I have to get up and go to my room after it doesn't work, I literally have to roll over and close my eyes or it's useless.

  5. Benadryl! Haha it's not a permanent fix but it does help when I need it every once in a blue moon.

I've heard Melatonin works pretty good, but I don't know for sure.

PS - You have an award on my blog :)

  6. Sometimes I use my ipod, it helps with the background noise but doesn't disturb anyone else.

  7. Kent had sleeping issues.

    they put him on Remeron.

It knocks him out cold for 4,6 or 8 hours (however long he HAS to sleep), but wakes up with no issues when his alarm goes off.

He wakes up completely refreshed, and feels fantastic.

  8. My fiance is a light sleeper too and it drives me crazy! Haha
He will listen to classical music on his ipod and he says it helps.

  9. Can you get a sound/noise machine or download an app for your phone? I listen to waves to drift off. I can't have the TV or radio on or else I stay up all night listening or watching the show, but waves are noisy enough (and boring enough) to knock me out.

  10. I just want to say I emphasize completely. I can't remember the last time I *really* slept!

Hope you find something that works!

  11. what if you put the TV on a sleep timer for it to go off in like...2 hours after you fall asleep..or will you know that it turns off!?

I feel bad..I love sleeping and I cant imagine how you're feeling!

  12. i know it's bad because it has medicine in it- but neo citron tea helps knock me out. its not nearly as strong as tylonol pm, so you won't wake up feeling drowsy and weird. also, i like to sleep with a fan. the white noise is really calming and blocks out noises in the distance like buses driving by my building etc. hope i helped! let us know if you discover anything that works.

  13. I sleep with the fan on. Its just enough noise to help me sleep b/c I can't sleep when it's really quiet either.

  14. Like a couple others, melatonin is a godsend. Even Chad uses it to help him sleep.

  15. I like to have some noise in the background when I sleep too, so I usually turn on a fan or I have a sound machine and listen to the waves crashing =P

  16. I'm quite the light sleeper too. Pregnancy was a blessing in the way that I could sleep like the dead for hours on end and fall asleep in seconds. But shortly after having B, I went back to my old self. Only now, the slightest coo from B wakes me up. And it takes me HOURS to fall back asleep. Sometimes if we have a rough night I think I hear crying even when he's not.
