Decisions, Decisions

Hello everyone!!

I am back safe and sound from my trip back home to Wisconsin which I will blog about tomorrow but I wanted to talk about something else today and I need your help!

So a few posts back I told y'all about the hubs and my babymoon to the Dominican Republic. Well M threw out another idea this weekend and I am torn between the two

M and I are going to Wisconsin in July because I will be standing up in my cousin's wedding. We had planned on driving from NC to WI and then the day after the wedding, leaving our pups with my parents and heading to the Dominican Republic whoch would save on us boarding them. Well M's idea was that instead of heading to the Dominican Republic we head up to his family's cabin in northern Wisconsin. I've seen pictures of it and it is truly beautiful and right on a lake. Growing up my family spent our vacations renting a cabin on a lake, boating, fishing and having campfire's at night. Don't get me wrong I loved those vacations but it's a totally different trip from the one I imagine, sitting on the beach with a fruity cocktail in hand. Also since M's relative's all equally own the cabin there is a chance that some of his family member's would be up there to join us. Which would be a lot of fun, don't get me wrong but again not the picture I really had in mind after 4 months of not seeing my hubby

Here is why I'm torn though. I've been doing great with paying off a lot of debt. We would be able to go to the Dominican Republic without putting the trip on a credit card and we wouldn't be hurting financially but then again we wouldn't be paying off debt either. Add to that we need a new couch and will probably need to pay for our whole apt to be carpeted I can't decide if we should save and go to the cabin or head off to our tropical destination.

Other factor's that we have to consider is the fact that in a little over a year we are going to be PCSing to Florida. Which means I will be leaving a great job and if we do have a kiddo or a kiddo on the way at that point, I don't want money to be tight. But at the same time this year would be the last year to take a tropical vacation for at least a few years since we will be preparing to move next summer and may be parent's already we wouldn't have the time or money to take a nice trip. And even if we did, we will be moving to florida and will live close to the beach. We won't need a tropical vacation for awhile.

So what would you all do. Take the dream vacation or do the smart thing and save up some money and head up to the cabin in Wisconsin where weather is always unpredictable and you have no idea what it's going to be like. M and I are torn and don't know what to do so I am asking you all for some advice!!

  1. I would go on the dream trip. My Fiance and I were just re-united after a 400 day deployment, the last thing I'd want is to be around people in such close quarters. Also, if it is a successful baby-moon, then you may not have a chance to take the trip for years, if EVER!

  3. Dream trip. You can only take so many a lifetime!

  4. Take the dream trip now, while you can, because once the babies come you won't have the freedom to get up and go. Enjoy yourselves, you only live once.

  5. If you can afford it - do it! Make some fond memories and maybe a baby too ;)

  6. I would do the trip if you can! I know it might not necessarily be the wisest financially to do, but the memories and fun far outweigh any of that before babies.

  7. I agree with everyone else. If you can afford it, then go on the trip! Once you have a baby, you can't just up and go. That's something my husband and I love - our freedom to plan trips. We don't usually do BIG vacations, but a few small ones throughout the year. We went to Disney last year for a belated honeymoon, and were talking about going again late this year, December or so. Now we can't because I'll be about 9 months pregnant then! Though we are ridiculously excited about a baby, of course. I was kind of sad...boo, now we can't go on our vacation. So...do it! :)

  8. If you really are serious about having kids soon, take the vacation now! My hubby and I still haven't gone on a dream vacation because of Army life, and I def want to before kids!

  10. Ok, totally random, but I think that my husband might be in the same unit as yours....since you were talking about moving to Florida next year. Sounds very familiar!

  11. Dang, I wrote my comment and then realized I missed the word verification.

I vote against the dream trip, and I think I'm the only one. My explanation is personally, getting out of debt is #1 in my life. I'd rather postpone the dream trip and get out of debt before babies, and then take the dream trip later.

Plus as soon as you said "cabin" and "northwoods of Wisconsin" I was sold! :-p

    Good luck deciding!

  12. I think for sure take the dream vaca! Especially if you want kids soon, once you DO have babies you won;\'t be able to do that for a LONG time. That's what we're doing, travel now so we can relax and raise our lil babies (when we have them).

But ultimately you'll feel right about your choice:-)

  13. Gotta go with everyone else- take the dream vacation! Sometimes there is only one chance to do the things you want to do and you gotta take it!

  14. Oh definitely go for the Dominican Republic. You can probably always go to the cabin in Wisconsin and that is also probably sort of kid friendly so when you have a family of your own you can probably go then.

You need to do this dream vacation while it is just the two of you and you can afford it. Especially after being apart for 4 months you are going to want the romantic relaxed atmosphere instead of worrying if some relatives are going to pop in!

  15. Oh my gosh I clicked over to comment and almost didn't bc I'm the only one that doesn't vote dream trip! My first thought was go with the cabin and MAKE IT into an amazing dream trip...dinners out, grilling, lounging in the water with drinks, sitting by the fire, sleeping in the sunshine - it could be amazing! My second thought was I would tell my husband his fam is awesome but I only want them there like 2 days haha.

  17. Totally take the DR trip! I've lived at the beach my entire life and I'd still kill for a trip to a tropical location! You can definitely go up to the lakehouse with baby, but not to the Dominican!

  18. I would take the dream trip. I am sure if you didn't you would regret it forever. Especially after having kids, you will never go back. Take it now, you can go to the cabin another time.!

  19. I'd pick the tropical vacation...but is there any way you could economize on it even a little? Like, stay in a less fancy hotel or take a cheaper flight? Or only spend so much on souvenirs and food? It's not fun to be worried about $$ on vacation but penny pinching here and there would probably be worth it if you could be on the beach with a drink in hand!
